A day in our life in Kumasi
Feb 3, 2025
It's been eight months since we settled into our house in Domeabra, Kumasi. From spending time with our dog Luna to partying with our neighbors and doing daily groceries at the shop below our house: life here has been good. But we've never actually given you a proper tour. Time to change that - let's get started!
When traveling from Accra to Kumasi, we usually take the STC bus - a comfortable option including Ghanaian movies or music to give the passengers some entertainment. After a six-hour journey, we arrive at Oduom Taxi Station, our stop in Kumasi. From there, it's another five kilometers to our house. We hop on a tro-tro (minivan) that takes us to Domeabra, passing Mary's shop, where we often buy our fruit, and the small "city center" of Domeabra, known for its delicious street food. A final 500-meter stretch along the road brings us home. Welcome - or as Ghanaians say: akwaaba!

For our daily groceries, we usually stop by Mr. Ben's shop, which, as you can see in the picture above, is located right beneath our house. Beyond the convenience, his warm smile is one of the main reasons we keep coming back. But his shop isn't the only hotspot nearby - just across the street is KITA, the agricultural institute we've partnered with. KITA is at the heart of our social life in Domeabra, home to around 50 students living on campus. It's also where we have our daily lunch - jollof rice, plantain, and chicken - at Osoofe Maame's kitchen. And last but not least, it's where we first met Emmanuel (known as 'Engineer'), our facility manager.

Although our Pontiac Vibe makes life and work here much easier, owning a fifth-hand car comes with its challenges: we regularly find ourselves at the mechanic. Fortunately, we don't have to go far, as Kujo's car repair shop is nearby. There's hardly anything he can't fix. Another place we visit often is Wood Village - a street lined with wood shops about 10 minutes from our house. Over the past eight months, we've placed several large orders here for the construction of our facility, making it an essential stop in our routine. But life isn't all work. In our free time, we often play a game of pool with our team at a local spot or catch a football match at Baba Yara Stadium.
